What is "ariadne"

Ariadne (; ; ), in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Minos, King of Crete, Son of Zeus and his queen Pasiphaë, daughter of Helios. She is mostly associated with mazes and labyrinths because of her involvement in the myths of the Minotaur and Theseus. Her father put her in charge of the labyrinth where sacrifices were made as part of reparations (either to Poseidon or to Athena, depending on the version of the myth); later, she helped Theseus overcome the Minotaur and save the potential sacrificial victims. In other stories, she became the bride of the god Dionysus, with the question of her being mortal or a goddess varying in those accounts.

Ariadne (named for the figure from Greek mythology) is a European association for sharing knowledge and fostering international cooperation in teaching that is open to the world.

Ariadne was initiated in 1996 by the European Commission's telematics for education and training program. Since then, an infrastructure has been developed in Belgium and Switzerland for the production of reusable learning content, including distributed storage and discovery, as well as its exploitation in structured courses. The core of this infrastructure is a distributed library of digital, reusable educational components called the Knowledge Pool System (KPS) now actively used in both academic and corporate contexts.

End users interact with the KPS through client tools. Java and web applications allow users to insert documents and their associated metadata into the KPS, search for relevant documents, and download them from the KPS. Java applications interact with the KPS through the ARIADNE Web Services. The ARIADNE Web Services provide an API that hides the database access details and also enables interoperability with other repositories.

The ARIADNE toolset contains the following components:

• The ARIADNE KPS Client
• SILO, the current Indexation- and Query tool for learning objects
• AMG, a component that leverages existing libraries for automatic metadata generation
• A LOM based Federated search engine, that dynamically searches other (more learning technology oriented) search systems like Lionshare, Merlot, Edna, NIME, etc.

Ariadne was a figure in Greek mythology. There is also a (Latin) variant of Ariadna.

Ariadne, 4C-D, α-Et-2C-D, BL-3912 or Dimoxamine is a lesser-known psychedelic drug. It is a homologue of 2C-D and DOM. Ariadne was first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin. In his book PiHKAL (Phenethylamines i Have Known And Loved), Shulgin reported testing Ariadne up to a dose of 32 mg, and reported that it produces psychedelia at a bare threshold. Very little data exists about the pharmacological properties, metabolism, and toxicity of Ariadne in humans apart from Shulgin's limited testing.

However, in more recent animal studies, 4C-D was shown to produce stimulus generalisation in rats trained to respond to the drug MDMA. This suggests that while 4C-D may lack hallucinogenic effects, it might potentially produce empathogenic effects similar to those of MDMA if used at higher dose ranges, beyond those trialled by Shulgin (the potency of 4C-D in this study was similar to that of MDMA, 1.5 mg/kg, which would equate to a dose of ~100 mg in a human).

Ariadne is a web magazine, 71 issues of which were published by UKOLN from January 1996 until the cessation of JISC funding to that organisation in July 2013. The Library of the University of Bath took over publishing until February 2015, producing two more issues. From March 2015, Loughborough University produces and hosts issues. An editorial board, consisting of librarians, practitioners and academics from several universities, as well as relevant subject specialists, procures and reviews content.

Ariadne was created originally as a project funded under the UK Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib), and covered topics such as information service developments and networking issues, particularly as they related to the United Kingdom. In later years, it also covered JISC-funded programmes and services, as well as developments in museums, libraries and archives worldwide.

From issue 74 onwards, Ariadne articles are largely practice-oriented i.e. written by practitioners involved with libraries, museums or archives detailing something that they've done in one of those places that is of interest to people working in the same field elsewhere.

Ariadne is a genus of nymphalid butterfly, commonly called Castors, found in Sub-saharan Africa to South-east Asia. The genus was named after Ariadne the daughter of Minos, king of Crete.
