Araucanía (historic region)

Araucanía or Araucana was the Spanish name given to the region of Chile inhabited by the Mapuche peoples known as the Moluche (also known as Araucanos by the Spanish) in the 18th century. Prior to the Spanish Conquest of Chile, the lands of the Moluche lay between the Itata River and Toltén River. Following the great rising of the Moluche and Huilliche after the Battle of Curalaba in 1598 during the Arauco War, the Spanish were expelled from south of the Bío-Bío River. After many decades of further warfare, the bounds of Araucania were recognized by the Spanish as being between the Bío-Bío River and Toltén River. This old region of Araucanía now is divided between the Bío-Bío Region and the Araucanía Region of Chile.

Araucania (wasp)

Araucania is a tiny genus of sapygid wasps from South America, containing a single known species. This species was originally described under the genus name Laura (by Reed in 1930) but this name was already in use for a crustacean named in 1883. Ironically, after Pate described this wasp genus, four other authors named genera Araucania only to be forced to replace those names, in turn.

It cuts through Araucania, goes along over the Pampas to the north, and loses itself in the Atlantic.

We shall go through the capital of Araucania, and cut the Cordilleras by the pass of Antuco, leaving the volcano on the south, and gliding gently down the mountain sides, past the Neuquem and the Rio Colorado on to the Pampas, till we reach the Sierra Tapalquen, from whence we shall see the frontier of the province of Buenos Ayres.
