What is "araucana"

The Araucana is a breed of chicken originating in Chile. This is one of the few chicken breeds native to the Americas of precolumbian origin. It is well known for its blue eggs, which is caused by a DNA retrovirus that occurred sometime early in domestication. In the United States it may be known as the South American Rumpless, and may be confused with other fowl, especially the Ameraucana and Easter Egger. Which were developed in the 1970s

National geographic 2014 study:

"Researchers sequenced mitochondrial DNA from 22 chicken bones found at Polynesian archaeological sites and 122 feathers from modern chickens living on islands across the South Pacific. They used an enzyme to remove any contamination by modern DNA that may have butted the results of earlier studies. When the team compared the "cleaned-up" DNA of Polynesian chickens with that of ancient and modern South American chickens, they found the two groups were genetically distinct."
