Anhangüera originates from a word in the Tupi language which was the nickname meaning "old devil" given by Brazilian Indians to an explorer and " bandeirante", Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva (1672–1740).

Anhanguera (pterosaur)

Anhanguera (meaning "old devil") is a genus of pterodactyloid pterosaur known from the Lower- Cretaceous ( Aptian age, 112Ma) Santana Formation of Brazil. This pterosaur is closely related to Ornithocheirus, and belongs in the family Ornithocheiridae within its own subfamily, Anhanguerinae.
