Anaxyrus is a genus of true toads native to North and Central America.
The meaning of the name was not explained by its author, Tschudi. It is speculated to be composed of the Greek (‘leader, chief’) and (‘tail’); or of the privative prefix an- and (‘being cut’, ‘an anchor’) or (‘axel’)
