Amphicarpy

Amphicarpy is a reproductive strategy that is expressed mostly in annual plant species, it is characterized by two types of offspring being produced. First is the normal production of seeds via aerial flowers with the ability to cross-pollinate, second are underground flowers that are usually self-pollinated and develop early in the season.

Plants use this strategy to insure that there is a good chance that their genetic material is passed on. It can be referred to as bet hedging in which and organism produces several different phenotypes.
