Wikipedia
Albany often refers to:
The Albany was an English automobile, manufactured by the Albany Motor Carriage Company in Christchurch, Dorset from 1971 - 1997.
The Albany, or simply Albany, is an apartment complex in Piccadilly, London.
Albany was a New Zealand electorate. It was located in north Auckland, and named after the suburb of Albany. It existed from 1978 to 2002, with a break from 1984 to 1987.
The Albany was a British car made in London from 1903 to 1905. Albany Manufacturing Co. Ltd made both petrol and steam cars, the steamers designed by Frederick Lamplough, who had originally built a shaft-driven steamer in 1896. Better known as the Lamplough-Albany, it sported two engines coupled by cranks at right angles and a super-heated coil-type generator. It could be steered either by wheel or tiller, and it appeared much like a petroleum-fueled car. It was offered for a single model year, 1903, while the petrol vehicles, one a single-cylinder and the other a 16 hp 2-cylinder, lasted for three. After the middle of 1905, Albany shifted its attention to selling Talbots and manufacturing parts.
The Albany Building is in Old Hall Street, between Ormond Street and George Street, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. Built originally as a meeting place for cotton brokers, it has since been converted into apartments. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
The Albany was an American car produced in Albany, Indiana, from 1907 to 1908.
It was produced as a Surrey and a runabout, and were early vehicles with false hoods and solid rubber tires. The single- and 2-cylinder air-cooled motors produced 6/7 hp and 18/20 hp, respectively.
The car was manufactured by a local inventor and businessman John L. Tulley (1872–1954), who held several turn of the 20th century patents, including a gauge to measure oil. Mr. Tulley was a natural mechanic whose early days were spent as a surveyor's assistant. He then went on to assist in building power and light plants around the midwest before arriving in Albany to form the Albany Automobile Company about 1906. The Albany Runabout had two opposing cylinders and was air-cooled. Up to 850 cars were said to have been built and they were shipped to all parts of the country, with at least one vehicle shipped to England.
Marketed as "the busy man's car", one of the Albany's main selling points were blue dyed elephant hide seats, which were supposedly guaranteed to last the lifetime of the car.
Local legend has it that Henry Ford came to Albany to look at the Runabout and exchange ideas with Tulley. Tulley also knew Elwood Haynes, who is credited with inventing the clutch.
