The Adolescents are an American punk rock band formed in Fullerton, California in 1980 by Steve Soto and Tony Cadena. From its earliest days, the band has functioned as a kind of Southern California punk supergroup, being formed originally from early members of Agent Orange and Social Distortion.
Since its inception the Adolescents has undergone a series of break-ups, reunions, and line-up changes. Their first break-up came in 1981, the same year that their self-titled debut album was released. The band reunited in 1986 and released the albums Brats in Battalions and Balboa Fun*Zone before splitting up again in 1989. After a one-off reunion performance in 1994, the band reunited yet again in 2001 for a 20th anniversary tour and have continued performing ever since. The Adolescents began releasing new material again with the albums OC Confidential (2005) and The Fastest Kid Alive (2011).
The band has influenced many notable punk rock, alternative rock, hard rock, and heavy metal bands, including Bad Religion, NOFX, Face to Face, Good Riddance, The Offspring, Pennywise, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fu Manchu, Mudhoney, Blink-182 and The Vandals.
Adolescents (often called The Blue Album) is the eponymous debut studio album by the Orange County punk rock band the Adolescents, released in May 1981 by Frontier Records. The album boasts an all-star cast, featuring three past Social Distortion members, ( Rikk Agnew, Frank Agnew and Casey Royer); former Agent Orange bassist Steve Soto; and a previously unknown singer named Tony Cadena. It was the only Adolescents album co-produced by Mike Patton (not to be confused with the lead singer of Faith No More) and Thom Wilson. It was also the band's only album released before their five-year hiatus.
Released during the breakthrough era for hardcore punk, the album brought the band a small amount of success in their hometown as they started to gather a following. "Amoeba" was released as a radio single to promote the album. Adolescents is now considered a classic punk album by fans and critics alike. In California punk sales, it second only to the Dead Kennedys' Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.
"Adolescents" is the lead single from Incubus' seventh album, If Not Now, When?. It was posted on the band's website on April 4, 2011 (a physical release was released 15 days later, April 19). This is their first single in two years following the release of the Prince and The Revolution cover " Let's Go Crazy" (from the 2009 compilation Monuments and Melodies). It has since peaked at #3 on both the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, and on the Billboard Rock Songs chart.
