Snowflake (airline)

Snowflake was a low-cost airline that operated out of Stockholm, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark between 30 March 2003 and 30 October 2004. Owned by the SAS Group, it was organized as a business unit within Scandinavian Airlines, operating as a virtual airline using their crew and aircraft. Snowflake served a total 28 destinations from its bases at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Copenhagen Airport.

The concept was launched using four Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It aimed primarily at Mediterranean holiday destinations, as well as destinations aimed at expatriates. From March 2004 two aircraft were replaced with two McDonnell Douglas MD-82s. The airline underestimated its costs and achieved an insufficient load factor, thus making services unprofitable. Upon terminating operations, Snowflake continued to be used as a brand for discounted tickets on European destinations.

Snowflake

A snowflake is either a single ice crystal or an aggregation of ice crystals which falls through the Earth's atmosphere. They begin as snow crystals which develop when microscopic supercooled cloud droplets freeze. Snowflakes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Complex shapes emerge as the flake moves through differing temperature and humidity regions, such that individual snowflakes are almost always unique in structure. Snowflakes encapsulated in rime form balls known as graupel. Snowflakes appear white in color despite being made of clear ice. This is due to diffuse reflection of the whole spectrum of light by the small crystal facets.

Snowflake (heraldry)

The snowflake or snow crystal, is a charge in heraldry.

The display in coats of arms is following a strictlt stylized form of the natural six pointed crystal form of a snowflake. In older heraldic literature, this charge is not to be seen. In modern heraldry, the snowflake is most used in northern Europe, in arms in Sweden, Norway and Finland, where it alludes to the meteorological features of the lands. Otherwise, it also is a symbol for winter, and together with the sun the changing seasons (e.g. In the arms of Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria, ), or locally important winter sport (e.g. Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, together with a pair of skis).

The tincture is often argent (silver).
