Núria

Núria [ˈnuɾia] is a Catalan girls' name taken from the valley, Vall de Núria with a Marian shrine. As with the Spanish name of the valley, el valle de Nuria, the name also occurs in Spanish without the accent as Nuria. The valley name, Núria, is believed to be from euskera origin. The name has also been linked to the Arabic unisex name Nur (name) meaning light. It can also be spelled as "Nuriyah".

The name, originally Mare de Déu de Núria, derives from Marian devotion to the Virgin of Nuria (Catalan Mare de Déu de Núria). The name is very popular in Catalonia, especially Ripollès - where the sanctuary is, Urgell, Priorat, Pallars Jussà, Osona, Noguera, Conca de Barberà, and Cerdanya. In 2007 it was the 7th most common female name in Catalonia, with a maximum recorded in the decade of the 1970s. The Saint's day for the name is September 8, Our Lady of Nuria (Dia de les Verges trobades)
