Icarus (disambiguation)

Icarus is a character in Greek mythology.

Icarus or ikarus may also refer to:

Icarus

In Greek mythology, Icarus (the Latin spelling, conventionally adopted in English; , Íkaros, Etruscan: Vikare) is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Often depicted in art, Icarus and his father attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus' father warns him first of complacency and then of hubris, asking that he fly neither too low nor too high, so the sea's dampness would not clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignored his father's instructions not to fly too close to the sun, whereupon the wax in his wings melted and he fell into the sea. This tragic theme of failure at the hands of hubris contains similarities to that of Phaëthon.

Icarus (journal)

Icarus is a scientific journal dedicated to the field of planetary science. Its longtime owner and publisher was Academic Press, which was then purchased by Elsevier. It is published under the auspices of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (DPS). The journal contains articles discussing the results of new research on astronomy, geology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, biology, and other scientific aspects of the Solar System or extrasolar systems.

The journal was founded in 1962, and became affiliated with the DPS in 1974. Carl Sagan served as editor of the journal from 1968 to 1979. He was succeeded by Joseph A. Burns (1980–1997) and Philip D. Nicholson (1998–present).

The journal is named for the mythical Icarus, and the frontispiece of every issue contains an extended quotation from Sir Arthur Eddington equating Icarus' adventurousness with the scientific investigator who "strains his theories to the breaking-point till the weak joints gape."

Icarus (crater)

Icarus is a lunar impact crater that lies on the Moon's far side. It is located to the west of the huge walled plain Korolev, and less than two crater diameters to the east of the crater Daedalus. To the south of Icarus is the smaller Amici.

Icarus has a worn rim and a relatively wide inner wall. A small crater lies across the southern rim, and the side bulges outward slightly along the southwestern face. There is a disproportionately tall central peak located near the crater midpoint. This rise is unusual in that it is taller than the outer rim; most peaks are only about half the crater depth. The remainder of the floor is relatively flat in the eastern half and slightly more irregular to the west.

Hebden included an Icarus track, "Benevolent Incubator", on his Late Night Tales compilation, and Icarus also provided a remix of the Four Tet track " My Angel Rocks Back and Forth".

Icarus (film)

Icarus (alternatively known as The Killing Machine and sometimes stylized as Dolph Lundgren is The Killing Machine) is a 2010 Canadian action thriller film directed by and starring Dolph Lundgren, along with actors David Lewis, Samantha Ferris, and Bo Svenson. The film centers around Edward Genn, a former Soviet hitman known as "Icarus". After the collapse of the Soviet Empire, he moved to the United States to begin a new life. But after many years, his past has finally caught up with him.

On August 8, 2008, Lundgren signed a contract with Insight Film Studios to direct and star in Icarus. Produced on a $6 million budget, filming began in October, 2008 in Vancouver, Canada. Filming was expected to last "about" five weeks, but reportedly wrapped after 18 days.

At the 2008 Cannes Film Market, CineTel Films acquired the international distribution rights to the film. The worldwide premiere took place on Canadian television. This was followed by a limited theatrical release in a number of countries, including: the United States (on September 10, 2010), the United Arab Emirates (on October 28), Bahrain (on November 25), Oman (on December 2), and Kuwait (on December 16). The film received mixed reviews; praise was aimed at the action scenes and violence. On August 16, 2010, the film was distributed on Blu-ray and DVD in the United Kingdom by Anchor Bay Films, followed by the United States on October 19.

ICARUS (experiment)

ICARUS (Imaging Cosmic And Rare Underground Signals) is a physics experiment aimed at studying neutrinos. It was located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). No longer operating, it is being refurbished at CERN for re-use in the same neutrino beam from Fermilab as the MiniBooNE experiment.

The ICARUS program was initiated by Carlo Rubbia in 1977, who proposed a new type of neutrino detector. These are called Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LAr-TPC), which should combine the advantages of bubble chambers and electronic detectors. In the course of the ICARUS program, such detectors of considerable capacity were proposed. After first runs at Pavia in 2001, the ICARUS T600 detector at Gran Sasso, filled with 760 tons of liquid argon, started operation in 2010. In order to study neutrino oscillations and various fundamental topics of modern physics, neutrinos of astronomic or solar sources, and CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso (CNGS) produced 730 km away by the Super Proton Synchrotron from CERN, have been detected through the reaction:

Ar + ν → K + e .

The CNGS neutrinos are also studied by the OPERA experiment, therefore those experiments are also called CNGS1 (OPERA) and CNGS2 (ICARUS).

The CNGS measurements also became important when the OPERA group announced in September and November 2011, that they have measured superluminal neutrinos (see faster-than-light neutrino anomaly). Shortly afterwards, the ICARUS collaboration published a paper in which they argued, that the energy distribution of the neutrinos is not compatible with superluminal particles. This conclusion was based on a theory of Cohen and Sheldon Lee Glashow. In March 2012, they published a direct neutrino velocity measurement based on seven neutrinos events. The result was in agreement with the speed of light and thus special relativity, and contradicts the OPERA result. In August 2012, another neutrino velocity measurement based on 25 neutrino events was published with increased accuracy and statistics, again in agreement with the speed of light, see measurements of neutrino speed.

The ICARUS detector will be moved to Fermilab in 2017 for a new neutrino experiment.

Usage examples of "icarus".

He had, after all, done his nuke perisher - the cos' Qualifying Course - after surviving the Icarus incident, and FOSM'S appointer had at the time hinted that if Farge succeeded in the perisher and was promoted to commander, he would, as the most experienced of the candidates, be getting one of the Swiftsures - the nuclear hunter-killers which, because of their success, were now being produced as fast as the yards could build them.

Quiescent and apparently defensive minded though they'd been since Icarus, Pierre was far from convinced that they were down for the count.

Moreover a perfect opportunity to test those modifications presented itself in the form of Icarus B’s twin, Icarus C, which was just in the right phase of construction to permit ready incorporation of the redesigns, provided that no time was wasted in approving the change of plan.

The journal of Neurophysiology's going to one zip code and Physica Scripta and ICARUS are going to another.
