Feddan

A feddan (, faddān) is a unit of area. It is used in Egypt, Sudan, Syria and the Sultanate of Oman. In Classical Arabic, the word means 'a yoke of oxen': implying the area of ground that could be tilled by them in a certain time. In Egypt the feddan is the only non-metric unit which remained in use following the switch to the metric system. A feddan is divided into 24 Kirats (175 m).

Usage examples of "feddan".

As he approached it, the lanes leading to the Feddan were being cleared for the mad antics of the Aissawa.

Every feddan he had he had honestly earned, but this was his way of offering backsheesh.

Though the young man's father went secretly to the Mamour, and offered him backsheesh, even to the tune of a feddan of land, the Mamour refused to accept it.

He only achieved this at last, again on the advice of Abdul Huseyn, by giving the Khedive as backsheesh the Syrian donkey-market, the five hundred feddans of cotton, and Hope's new school.
