Arion

Arion (; ) was a kitharode in ancient Greece, a Dionysiac poet credited with inventing the dithyramb: "As a literary composition for chorus dithyramb was the creation of Arion of Corinth," The islanders of Lesbos claimed him as their native son, but Arion found a patron in Periander, tyrant of Corinth. Although notable for his musical inventions, Arion is chiefly remembered for the fantastic myth of his kidnapping by pirates and miraculous rescue by dolphins, a folktale motif. Herodotus (1,23) says "Arion was second to none of the lyre-players in his time and was also the first man we know of to compose and name the dithyramb and teach it in Corinth". However J.H. Sleeman observes of the dithyramb, or circular chorus, "It is first mentioned by Archilochus (c 665 BC)… Arion flourished at least 50 years later… probably gave it a more artistic form, adding a chorus of 50 people, personating satyrs… who danced around an altar of Dionysus. He was doubtless the first to introduce the dithyramb into Corinth".

Arion is also associated with the origins of tragedy: of Solon John the Deacon reports: “Arion of Methymna first introduced the drama [i.e. action] of tragedy, as Solon indicated in his poem entitled Elegies".

Arion (gastropod)

Arion is a genus of air-breathing land slugs in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. Most species of this Palearctic genus are native to the Iberian Peninsula.

Species can be difficult to distinguish from one another upon cursory examination, because individuals of a species can vary in color and there are few obvious differences between taxa. The color of an individual can be influenced by its diet.

Some Arion are known as pests, such as A. lusitanicus auct. non Mabille (= A. vulgaris), which damages agricultural crops and ornamental plants, and A. rufus, a familiar garden pest. Arion slugs are often transported internationally in shipments of plant products and mushrooms.

Arion (mythology)

In Greek mythology, Arion or Areion (, gen.: Ἀρίωνος, Ἀρείωνος) is a divinely-bred, extremely swift immortal horse which, according to the Latin poet Sextus Propertius, was endowed with speech.

Arion's siring by Poseidon in stallion form vary by author: according to the Pseudo-Apollodorus, the horse was foaled by Demeter while she was "in the likeness of a Fury"; Pausanias reported that, according to Antimachus, the horse was the foal of Gaia, the Earth, herself. In the Epic Cycle Arion was mounted most notably by Adrastus, king of Argos.

The earliest literary mention of Arion is in Homer, Iliad, XXIII, 346. Statius also made mention of the horse in his 1st-century Latin epic poem the Thebaid, VI, 301.

Not that Arion had discounted it, but when a mate never materialized, he assumed Morven must have misinterpreted her vision.

Still, Arion never accepted anything at face value or took anyone but his most trusted advisers at their word.

Lord Arion, Lanka had inscrutable obsidian eyes, devoid of any warmth or emotion.

The Enhancers, known for their spirituality and integrity, commanded respect throughout the galaxy, and Arion had consented to allow Eirene to stand as the requisite witness.

She was determined she would be a good mate to Arion, and do her best to respect him and to honor the Leor ways.

Jenna and Arion as they entered was almost unbearable, especially after being in the cool breezes of Shamara.

She followed Arion as he turned down another corridor, trying to ignore the nearly nude bodies of his crew, and their blatant stares.

They wore nothing but loincloths, and their massive, smooth bodies towered over her as she walked beside Arion down what appeared the main thoroughfare.

She understood that was how long it had taken Arion and his crew to collect the Shielder colonists and transport them, also in sleep stasis, to Shamara, and then return to Saura.

She was trembling, and Jenna wondered what Arion had done to terrify her so, although she already knew he could inspire fear with just a glance, with those glittering, obsidian eyes.

Jenna watched as Arion methodically cleaned a wicked-looking sword, running a soft cloth along the blade.

She had to share it with Arion, but it was large, and he was at the other end.

But the upcoming mating with Arion loomed over her, obliterating all other issues.

However, she was certain about one thing: Monster or not, Arion was her destined mate.

Despite their strict beliefs about mating, Leors were casual about displaying their bodies, and Arion was unconcerned by his nudity.
