Vijay (actor)

Vijay (born Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar on 22 June 1974) is an Indian film actor and playback singer who appears in Tamil films. Nicknamed "Ilaya Thalapathy" (young general) by his fans, he has appeared in more than 50 Tamil films and earned accolades, including Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and has been described as one of the successful stars of Tamil cinema.

The son of film director and producer S. A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar, Vijay started his career as a child actor in the film Vetri (1984) and later made his debut as a lead actor in the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu, both of which were directed by his father. After a series of failures, the family drama Poove Unakkaga (1996) marked a turning point in his career and he then went on to appear in commercially successful films like Pokkiri (2007), Thuppakki (2012) and Kaththi (2014).

Vijay is a 1988 Bollywood action film directed by Yash Chopra and featuring an ensemble star cast consisting of Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Anil Kapoor, Raj Babbar, Moushmi Chatterjee and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles. Anupam Kher won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance. The role played by Anil Kapoor was written originally for Mithun Chakraborty.

The plot of the film was inspired by Chopra's previous film Trishul. This was the last action film Yash Chopra directed and the last action film produced under Yash Raj Films for 16 years until Dhoom released in 2004.
