SuperValu (Ireland)

SuperValu is a supermarket chain that operates on the island of Ireland.

Similar in organisation to Spar and Londis, in that most individual stores are owned on a franchise basis, with the store owners using a standardised store format and selling the same own brand SuperValu products. However it differs from these chains in that SuperValu outlets tend to be significantly larger than the convenience store formats used by Spar and Londis, and the larger SuperValu stores are on a par with full-service supermarkets. Their competitors are Tesco Ireland, Dunnes Stores and Eurospar.

SuperValu (Canada)

Super Valu is a chain of franchised and associated grocery stores in Canada that operates primarily in the western part of the country. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, many Super Valu stores were created from former Loblaws stores. Loblaw Companies Limited (through its Westfair Foods division) supplies Super Valu stores and owns the Super Valu name.

In the mid-1970s, a larger version of Super Valu was created. Dubbed the Real Canadian Superstore, these warehouse-sized grocery stores were closer to department stores in scope. By the mid-1990s, only a handful of smaller Super Valu stores remained (primarily in British Columbia) as most had either been rebranded as "Extra Foods" or expanded into Real Canadian Superstore outlets (or the related Real Canadian Wholesale Club).

SuperValu (United States)

SuperValu, Inc. is an American retailing company. The corporation, headquartered in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, has been in business for nearly a century. It is the fifth-largest food retailing company in the United States (after Kroger and Albertsons), and ranks in the top 100 on the 2015 Fortune 500 list. Supermarket News ranked SuperValu #1 in the 2008 "Top Wholesalers for 2008".

On June 2, 2006, Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons, Inc. and 1,124 of its stores were sold to SuperValu. The sale was approved by the shareholders of both SuperValu and Albertsons on May 30, 2006. In January 2013, the company announced it was selling the Acme Markets, Shaw's, and Jewel-Osco chains and their remaining Albertsons stores to Cerberus Capital Management for $100 million in cash with Cerberus assuming $3.2 billion in existing debt. SuperValu would keep its Cub, Farm Fresh, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Shop ‘n Save and Hornbacher’s brands as well as its wholesale supply operation while the Acme, Shaw's, Star Market, and Jewel-Osco stores were reunited with Albertsons. The deal closed March 21, 2013.
