Streptose

L-steptose is a branched monosacharide similar to Apiose in structure. L-steptose has been found in amino-glycoside antibiotics. These antibiotics are known to carry unusual sacharides as part of their components. One example is steptomycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic. streptomycin is known to have toxic effects in the kidney, as well as other unwanted side-effects.

L-Steptose has been prepared from a carbohydrate derivative. The protected monosacharide was reacted with an organo-lithum sulfur compound and then catalyticly hydrolyzed to produce L-steptose.
