"lefthander," 1885, originally baseball slang, of pitchers, often said to have been coined by Finley Peter Dunne ("Mr. Dooley"), Chicago sports journalist and humorist, in the days when, it is said, baseball diamonds regularly were laid out with home plate to the west. But south paw "a person's left hand" is attested from 1848 in the slang of pugilism.

Southpaw (Sasha Martin) is a fictional character that first appeared in the Marvel comic She-Hulk. She is Holden Holliway's granddaughter and in the custody of She-Hulk (and if She-Hulk becomes Jennifer Walters, then Awesome Andy).

She is incredibly powerful because of a gauntlet she wears that cannot be removed. She has a short temper and will often act without thinking (i.e., destroying her high school because they brought back school uniforms, or attacking the Champion because he took a piece of fruit from her).

Southpaw is a 2015 American sports drama film directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by Kurt Sutter, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and Rachel McAdams. The film was released on July 24, 2015, by The Weinstein Company.

This was one of the last films to be scored by James Horner, before the composer's death, and one of three posthumous releases to feature his music. The film and the movie's soundtrack album are dedicated to his memory.
