Salsola \Sal"so*la\, n. [NL., fr. L. salsus salt, because they contain alkaline salts.] (Bot.) A genus of plants including the glasswort. See Glasswort.

The flavoring varies widely, popular variants being fruit or cola flavoring.

   Soda alum (Min.), a mineral consisting of the hydrous sulphate of alumina and soda.

   Soda fountain, an apparatus for drawing soda water, fitted with delivery tube, faucets, etc.

   Soda lye, a lye consisting essentially of a solution of sodium hydroxide, used in soap making.

   Soda salts, salts having sodium for the base; specifically, sodium sulphate or Glauber's salts.

   Soda waste, the waste material, consisting chiefly of calcium hydroxide and sulphide, which accumulates as a useless residue or side product in the ordinary Leblanc process of soda manufacture; -- called also alkali waste.

n. (context botany English) Any member of the genus ''Salsola'' of amarantaceous plants, including the saltwort.

Salsola is a genus of the subfamily Salsoloideae in the family Amaranthaceae. The genus sensu stricto is distributed in central and southwestern Asia, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. A common name of various members of this genus and related genera is saltwort, for their salt tolerance. The genus name Salsola is from the Latin salsus, meaning "salty".
