Roque

Roque \Roque\ (r[=o]k), n. [Abbr. fr. Croquet.] A form of croquet modified for greater accuracy of play. The court has a wood border often faced with rubber, used as a cushion in bank shots. The balls are 31/4 in. in diameter, the cage (center arches or wickets) 33/8 in. wide, the other arches 31/2 in. wide.

Roque is an American variant of croquet played on a hard, smooth surface. Popular in the first quarter of the 20th century and billed "the Game of the Century" by its enthusiasts, it was an Olympic sport in the 1904 Summer Games, replacing croquet from the previous games.
