What is "purex"

PUREX is a chemical method used to purify fuel for nuclear reactors or nuclear weapons. It is an acronym standing for Plutonium Uranium Redox EXtraction. PUREX is the de facto standard aqueous nuclear reprocessing method for the recovery of uranium and plutonium from used ("spent", or "depleted") nuclear fuel. It is based on liquid–liquid extraction ion-exchange.

The PUREX process was invented by Herbert H. Anderson and Larned B. Asprey at the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago, as part of the Manhattan Project under Glenn T. Seaborg; their patent "Solvent Extraction Process for Plutonium" filed in 1947, mentions tributyl phosphate as the major reactant which accomplishes the bulk of the chemical extraction.

Purex is the brand name of a popular laundry detergent in the United States, Canada and other countries. It is manufactured by the Dial Corporation, a U.S. subsidiary of Germany's Henkel Corporation. Purex is one of the most widely used laundry detergents in North America. It takes its name from a sister product, Purex bleach, which was a widely popular competitor to Clorox bleach.

In 1982 Purex Industries was acquired in a leveraged buyout by Gibbons, Green and van Amerongen Ltd., the predecessor of Leonard Green & Partners. In 1985, the Purex household and consumer product lines were acquired by The Dial Corporation consumer business.

Purex bathroom tissue is Western Canada's #1 selling bathroom tissue and is manufactured and distributed by Kruger Products. The product is manufactured at Kruger's plant in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Launched nearly a century ago, Purex Bathroom Tissue is available at grocery, drug, mass merchandise, club and dollar retailers in Western Canada in regular 2-ply and Ultra 3-ply formats, as well as Purex EnviroCare which is made from 100 per cent recycled paper.
