1769, short for stella polaris, Modern Latin, literally "the pole star" (see polar). The ancient Greeks called it Phoenice, "the Phoenician (star)," because the Phoenicians used it for navigation, though due to precession of the equinoxes it was not then the pole star. Also see pole (n.2). The Old English word for it was Scip-steorra "ship-star," reflecting its importance in navigation. As the name of a U.S. Navy long-range submarine-launched guided nuclear missile, it dates from 1957.

Polaris (comics)

Polaris (Lorna Dane) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, most commonly in association with the X-Men. Created by Arnold Drake, Don Heck, Werner Roth and Jim Steranko, Polaris first appeared in The X-Men #49 (October, 1968). For most of her publication history, she has been a superheroine, and a member of either the X-Men or one of its sister groups, such as X-Factor, though from 1987 to 1989, she was possessed by a villainous telepathic entity, and functioned as the supervillain Malice.

A mutant, Polaris can control magnetism, much like Magneto, whom she long suspected to be her biological father, a fact confirmed in Uncanny X-Men #431 (2003). She has also had a complicated long term relationship with the X-Man Havok, to whom she was engaged. Another aspect of her character are her recurrent struggles with mental health issues, including infrequent but severe bouts of mental distress during which she acts erratically or struggles to function.

Polaris (band)

Polaris is an indie rock band that was formed as a one-off musical project in the mid-1990s involving members of the New Haven indie rock band Miracle Legion. They were commissioned specifically to produce music for the Nickelodeon television show The Adventures of Pete & Pete, which was later compiled into the group's first and only album. Nearly twenty years after the show was cancelled, Polaris re-emerged with its first tour and a cassingle of two new songs.

Polaris (convention)

Polaris (formerly Toronto Trek) is an annual science fiction and fantasy convention held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the past and now held in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada.

It began in 1986 as a relaxacon as Toronto Trek Celebration. Two years later, in 1988, Toronto Trek Celebration 2 took place. In 1989 it dropped the word "Celebration" and became simply "Toronto Trek". For its twenty-first convention in 2007, the name was changed to "Polaris". At Polaris 26, held July 5–7, 2012, it was announced Polaris had come to an end and that a new convention would replace Polaris in 2013.

The convention had a focus on media guests from science fiction, fantasy movies and television series and novel authors such as Star Trek, Babylon 5, Stargate, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jericho, Lost and Battlestar Galactica. Photo opportunities, autographs and Question & Answer sessions feature the media guest, who sometimes come to other programming and after hours events.

Polaris was one of several activities run by the TCON Promotional Society by means of a convention committee of more than 100 people grouped into 38 individual teams, each taking care of a different part of the convention. The TCON Promotional Society has coordinated other events, such as the Canadian Conrunners Conference in 2004, Their other current project is the Constellation Awards, a fan-nominated, fan-voted set of Science Fiction Awards with focus on film and television science fiction. TCON hosted events are proposed to the TCON Board of Directors and voted upon by said Board. The TCON Promotional Society is a not-for-profit corporation based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

POLARIS (seismology)

POLARIS was an underground experiment to observe seismic signals at depth in very hard rock. It was carried out at SNOLAB, and underground physics laboratory, in Sudbury, Ontario. In addition to academic research, the data generated in the POLARIS experiment was used by the Canadian National Data Centre (CNDC) for earthquake, and nuclear explosion (see Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty) monitoring.

"Polaris" is the second single from the album Twilight of the Innocents by the band Ash. It was released in the on June 15 in Ireland and the United Kingdom and the United States on June 18, 2007, reaching number 32 in the UK singles chart. As of 2016, it remains their last single to reach the UK top 40 singles chart. It also reached number 34 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

The band released the video for the song to their YouTube profile on 26 May.

Polaris is a Texas hold 'em poker playing program developed by the computer poker research group at the University of Alberta, a project that has been under way for 16 years as of 2007. Polaris is a composite program consisting of a number of bots, including Hyperborean08, the winner of the limit equilibrium series in the 2008 Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Computer Poker Competition. Polaris also contains a number of other fixed strategies, and chooses between these strategies during a match. Polaris requires little computational power at match time, so it is run on an Apple MacBook Pro laptop during competitions. Polaris plays only heads-up (two player) Limit Texas hold'em.

Antiquities dealer Alex Benedict and his employee, Chase Kolpath, become involved in a mystery involving the disappearance of the passengers and crew of an interstellar yacht from 60 years earlier.

Polaris (Stratovarius album)

Polaris is the twelfth studio album by power metal band Stratovarius, released on 15 May 2009 (see release history). It is the first Stratovarius album to feature bassist Lauri Porra and guitarist Matias Kupiainen, following former bassist Jari Kainulainen's departure from the band in 2005 and former guitarist Timo Tolkki's departure in 2008.

Timo Kotipelto, who at the time of Polaris' release had been a member of Statovarius in the earliest year (1994) among the current members, considered Polaris to be "the album that saved the band" and said that "without it there would not be any Stratovarius." More time passed between the release of Stratovarius' eponymous album Stratovarius in 2005 and the release of Polaris than between any other two consecutive albums released by the band. Stratovarius in 2006 had recorded a demo album called Revolution Renaissance, performed one Revolution Renaissance song live in August 2007 ("Last Night on Earth") and according to Kotipelto had intended to release a completed version of Revolution Renaissance in 2008. However, the songs of that album were re-recorded and released in 2008 as New Era, the first album of Tolkki's new band, Revolution Renaissance, which acquired the album's prior name.

Polaris reached No. 2 on the Finnish albums chart, as well as reaching the top 70 in five other countries. " Deep Unknown" was released as a single, reaching No. 20 on the Finnish singles chart. In its first week of release, the album sold around 800 copies in the U.S.

The Polaris was a design of locomotive-hauled train designed in concept form by CSRE Ltd. The train was inspired by the British Rail InterCity 125 (HST), and was intended to have a top speed of . The loco hauled trains would have had two power cars and been compatible with British Rail Mark 3 coaches. The power cars would have either been Diesel electric, electric and electro-diesel, making the design suitable for use across the whole British railway network. CSRE also proposed an Electric multiple unit (EMU) type of Polaris called the Polaris E.

The Polaris concept will now not be taken to market.

Polaris: Chivalric Tragedy at Utmost North (2005) is an indie role-playing game written by Ben Lehman and published by These Are Our Games. Polaris is a collaborative roleplaying game, and as such differs from many role-playing games in that there is no single " game master". A player's "opposition" is controlled by the other players in the game.

Polaris won the Indie RPG Award for Innovation (2005) and Indie RPG Game of the Year Award (2005), was "Runner up" for Best Support (2005) and Best Production (2005), and was also "Runner Up" for the Outie Award Best Sui Generis RPG (2005).

Polaris: Voyage for Orchestra is an orchestral composition by the British composer Thomas Adès. The work was co-commissioned by the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas for the opening of the New World Center.
