New Delhi

New Delhi is the capital and seat of the Government of India. It is also a municipality and district in Delhi and serves as the seat of Government of Delhi.

The foundation stone of the city was laid by George V, Emperor of India during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. It was designed by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by Viceroy and Governor-General of India Lord Irwin.

Although colloquially Delhi and New Delhi as names are used interchangeably to refer to the jurisdiction of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, these are two distinct entities, and the latter is a small part of the former.

New Delhi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.

New Delhi (1987 film)

New Delhi is a 1987 Malayalam thriller film written by Dennis Joseph and directed by Joshiy and produced by Joy Thomas. It stars Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Sumalatha, Urvashi, B. Thiagarajan, Siddique, Vijayaraghavan, Mohan Jose, Devan, and Jagannatha Varma. The film was the highest grosser of the year, its success resurrected Mammootty's career in 1987 after having a string of box-office flops in the prior years.

The film was remade and released in Telugu as Anthima Theerpu, which was directed by Joshiy himself. Joshiy also directed the Hindi and Kannada versions titled "New Delhi". Lead roles were played by Jeetendra in its Hindi version and Ambareesh in the Kannada version, respectively. The story is loosely based on the novel "The Almighty" by Irving Wallace. Thiagarajan, who played the role of Salem Vishnu in New Delhi, later produced and directed a Tamil film titled Salem Vishnu which showcased the prequel story of his character.

The film starred Vyjayanthimala and Kishore Kumar in the lead with Jabeen Jalil, Nana Palsikar, Nazir Hussain, Prabhu Dayal, Dhumal, Brahm Bhardwaj, Radhakrishan, Mumtaz Begum, Mirza Musharraf and Shivraj as the ensemble cast. The film was produced by Mohan Segal himself. The film's score was composed by Shankar Jaikishan duo with lyrics provided by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra, edited by Pratap Dave and was filmed by K. H. Kapadia. The story is about Punjabi boy Anand and Tamil girl Janaki falls in love with each other but unfortunately separated by their family.
