Michael (archangel)

Michael (; ; ; ; ) is an archangel in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran traditions, he is called "Saint Michael the Archangel" and "Saint Michael". In the Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox traditions, he is called " Taxiarch Archangel Michael" or simply "Archangel Michael".

Michael is mentioned three times in the Book of Daniel, once as a "great prince who stands up for the children of your people". The idea that Michael was the advocate of the Jews became so prevalent that, in spite of the rabbinical prohibition against appealing to angels as intermediaries between God and his people, Michael came to occupy a certain place in the Jewish liturgy.

In the New Testament Michael leads God's armies against Satan's forces in the Book of Revelation, where during the war in heaven he defeats Satan. In the Epistle of Jude Michael is specifically referred to as "the archangel Michael". Christian sanctuaries to Michael appeared in the 4th century, when he was first seen as a healing angel, and then over time as a protector and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil. By the 6th century, devotions to Archangel Michael were widespread both in the Eastern and Western Churches. Over time, teachings on Michael began to vary among Christian denominations.

Michael (Franz Ferdinand song)

"Michael" is a song by Scottish indie rock band Franz Ferdinand. It was released as the fourth single from their eponymous debut studio album on 16 August 2004 through Domino Records. It was released in multiple formats, including a 7" vinyl, two 12" vinyls, and two CDs. The second CD that was released was pulled from stores a day after its release due to chart ineligibility as it had three tracks on it instead of two, which is the allowed amount of tracks for the CD2 format. It was later re-released with only two tracks. The song had significant chart performance as it peaked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart and at number 39 on the Irish Singles Chart. The song has been featured in the soundtracks for the video games Gran Turismo 4 and Dancing Stage Max.

Michael (also known as Mikaël, Chained: The Story of the Third Sex, and Heart's Desire) was a German silent film released in 1924, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, director of other notable silents such as The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), Master of the House (1925), and Leaves from Satan's Book (1921). The film stars Walter Slezak as the titular Michael, the young assistant and model to the artist Claude Zoret ( Benjamin Christensen). Michael (Bulgarian pretender)

Michael was a Bulgarian nobleman, the son of Tsar Konstantin Tih of Bulgaria and Maria Palaiologina Kantakouzene, niece of emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos of the Byzantine Empire. He was born in 1270, was declared porphyrogennetos (perhaps to block any older sons of Constantine from inheriting the throne), and was crowned co-emperor by his parents in or before 1272.

When his fatherwas killed in battle against Ivailo in 1277, Michael was left as the nominal legitimate emperor of Bulgaria, but he ruled under the guidance of his mother, and his control was quickly restricted to the capital Tărnovo. While much of the provinces fell into the hands of Ivailo, his great-uncle Michael VIII put forward his own pretender to the throne, Ivan Asen III, a son of Mitso Asen of Bulgaria and Maria of Bulgaria.

With Byzantine armies marching north intent on placing Ivan Asen III on the throne, Maria Kantakouzene came to an arrangement with Ivailo, whereby she married her husband's murderer and associated him on the throne together with her son. Ivailo was successful in resisting the Byzantine encroachments until he was blockaded by the Golden Horde of Nogai Khan inside Drăstăr ( Silistra) for three months in 1279. Assuming that he was dead, the city nobles opened the gates of Tărnovo to the besieging Byzantine army and accepted Ivan Asen III as emperor.

Together with his mother Maria, Michael was sent into captivity in the Byzantine Empire. He reappeared on the pages of history only about 1302, when a faction of the Bulgarian nobility invited him to recover his throne from Theodore Svetoslav. Although provided with Byzantine military support, Michael proved unable to assert himself in Bulgaria. The date of his death is unknown.

Michael (poem)

"Michael" is a pastoral poem, written by William Wordsworth in 1800 and first published in the 1800 edition of Lyrical Ballads. The poem is one of William Wordsworth's best known poems and the subject of much critical literature. It tells the story of an aging shepherd, Michael, and his only child Luke.

Michael lost half his land when he used it as a surety for a nephew who had met with financial misfortune. When Luke reaches the age of 18, Michael sends Luke to stay with a merchant that he might learn a trade and acquire sufficient wealth to regain the land that Michael has lost. It breaks Michael's heart to send Luke away and he makes Luke lay the first stone of a sheepfold as a covenant between them that Luke will return. However, Luke is corrupted in the city and is forced to flee the country and Michael must live out his life without his son. He returns sometimes to the sheepfold but no longer has the heart to complete it....

The epigraph of George Eliot's Silas Marner is taken from the poem.

The story of "Michael" may derive in part from the famous "Parable of the Prodigal Son" in the Bible.
