Khemara (NGO)

Khemara is a Cambodian non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in 1991 by Mu Sochua. It claims to be the first local NGO in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. The group's mission is to promote "the wellbeing of communities" and the advancement of women and children in Cambodia.

The organisation operates in a number of communities throughout Cambodia to address the needs of poor villagers, especially women and children. It also promotes basic human rights, including access to education, health services, reproductive health, protection from domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS prevention. Its initiatives include care for orphans and vulnerable children, non-formal education, reproductive health care, services for people living with HIV/AIDS, housing programs, and programs to support sex workers and men who have sex with men.

Khemara is a member of the HIV/AIDS Coordination Committee, the NGO Committee on Rights of a Child, the NGO Forum, the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia, End Child Prostitution, Abuse and Trafficking in Cambodia, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and the Gender and Development Network Cambodia. It is recognised as a "child safe organisation" by the Cambodian government.

Khemara is a formal term for Khmer in the Khmer language and used as a personal name as well as in organization names. It is also written as khamara and khemarak and different suffixes.
