A gangster is a criminal who is a member of a gang. Some gangs are considered to be part of organized crime. Gangsters are also called mobsters, a term derived from mob and the suffix -ster. Gangs provide a level of organization and resources that support much larger and more complex criminal transactions than an individual criminal could achieve. Gangsters have been active for many years in countries around the world.

Some gangsters, such as Al Capone have become infamous. Gangsters are the subject of many novels and films, particularly from the period between 1920 and 1990.

Contemporary criminals often refer to themselves as "gangsta" in reference to non-rhotic Black American pronunciation.

Gangster is a 2006 Indian romantic crime drama film that premiered on 28 April. It stars Shiney Ahuja, Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut. The plot is that of a bar girl who falls in love with two people, one a layman and the other a gangster. The music is composed by Pritam. The film was rumoured to be based on the life of mobster Abu Salem and former actress Monica Bedi, but the director Anurag Basu said that it is not based upon any real characters or incidents. Gangster was a hit at the box office. The movie is debut of actress Kangana Ranaut.

The Gangster film series is a Bollywood crime thriller film series written, directed and produced by Ram Gopal Varma. It is based on the Indian mafia organization D-Company, known to be run by Dawood Ibrahim. The first film came in 1998: the critically acclaimed Satya. In 2002 came commercial as well as critical success, Company. 2 prequels to Company was made in 2005 and 2013 respectively: D and Satya 2. Both films failed at the box-office.

Gangster is a 2014 Malayalam gangster film directed by Aashiq Abu. Mammootty plays the lead role, along with Nyla Usha and Aparna Gopinath as the female leads. The film also features John Paul, T. G. Ravi, Sekhar Menon, Kunchan, Alexx O'Nell, Hareesh Peradi and Dileesh Pothan in supporting roles. The film was written by Ahmed Sidhique and Abhilash Kumar, with music by Deepak Dev. The film released on 11 April 2014.

Gangster (1994 film)

Gangster ( Hindi: गैंगस्टर) is a 1994 Hindi film. The movie starred Dev Anand as the protagonist of the story. It also starred Mamta Kulkarni and Manu Gargi as the romantic pair of the movie.

The story is about a priest, Father Ferriera ( played by Dev Anand), who unwittingly becomes a witness to the rape and murder of a village woman by the rich man of the village, Chandulal Seth( played by Ajit). Father Ferriera is framed for the crime by Chandulal Seth and is sent to the jail instead. During the jail time spent Father Ferriera develops a good friendship with some of the jail mates. On release from the jail, he along with his former jail mates decide on taking revenge with Chandulal Seth who is now one of the richest jewelers of the world.
