What is "deadband"

A deadband (sometimes called a neutral zone or dead zone) is an interval of a signal domain or band where no action occurs (the system is ' dead' - i.e. the output is zero). Deadband regions can be used in voltage regulators and other controllers to prevent oscillation or repeated activation-deactivation cycles (called 'hunting' in proportional control systems).
