Colchicine

Colchicine is a medication most commonly used to treat gout. It is a toxic natural product and secondary metabolite, originally extracted from plants of the genus Colchicum (autumn crocus, Colchicum autumnale, also known as "meadow saffron").

Adverse effects are primarily gastrointestinal upset at high doses. In addition to gout, colchicine is used to treat familial Mediterranean fever, pericarditis, Behçet's disease, and atrial fibrillation.

It should, however, be observed that curare, colchicine, and veratrine are musclepoisons-that is, act on nerves having some special relation with the muscles, and, therefore, could not be expected to act on Drosera.

Roots, stalks, leaves contain an acrid narcotic, superbine, as well as colchicine and choline.

Since colchicine retards cell-division, a propulsion spell was used to ensure its efficacy.

Sanguinaria, yielding a substance called sanguinarin, now rivals colchicine as an evolution chemical.

Beltsville, Maryland, shows that a fifth percent solution of sanguinarin produces approximately the same results as colchicine, with perhaps a smoother result as to effects on leaves of the plants tested.

If elements of this latter nature had been present in the leaves, it might have been expected that morphia, hyoscyamus, atropine, veratrine, colchicine, curare, and diluted alcohol would have produced some marked effect.
