Brücius

Brücius (full name: Brücius von Xylander, born 1/1/1967) is a San Francisco, California-based tattoo artist, known for his distinctive linework and blackwork in an etching style. Brücius specializes in natural scientific and medieval illustration.

Since 2009, Brücius has managed and tattooed out of Black and Blue, a woman-owned tattoo shop in San Francisco that opened in 1995, and SFist named one of the Bay Area's 9 Best Tattoo Shops. He has tattooed clients internationally. In September 2015 he was a guest tattoo artist at AKA in Neukölln, Berlin,Sang Bleu in London, Puro in Milan, and Tribal Act in Paris. Following European tours, his work has been featured abroad by Sang Bleu and Heritage Post magazines. In 2017 he plans to open Black Serum, his own shop in San Francisco's Mission District.

Among his awards and distinctions, Brücius won First Prize at Biennale International Tattoo in 2015. He was also recognized by form.ink's Top 10 Tattoo Artists in the Bay Area. Brücius is a regular labor donor to Tatzoo, and has performed live at artist events at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. He has also tattooed musician Mara Hruby.

Born in rural upstate New York, where he gained an appreciation for nature, Brücius and his family moved to Los Angeles when he was a young child. On the west coast from LA to Seattle, for 30 years Brücius pursued drafting, graphic design, graphite drawings, and architecture. From 2007 to 2009 Brücius attended the Art Center in Pasadena, California with a focus on Fine Art. He was an artist assistant in Los Angeles for roughly a year doing fine art graphite drawings before pursuing a career in the tattoo industry.
