Black Mamba (comics)

Black Mamba (Tanya Sealy) is a fictional character, a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. She first appeared in Marvel Two-in-One #64 (June 1980) created by writers Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio. The character is most closely associated with the Serpent Society and BAD Girls, Inc. but has also been a member of the Masters of Evil, the Femizons and the Women Warriors.

Her first mission was for the Roxxon Oil Company, which had given her her super powers. Alongside with Anaconda, Death Adder and SIdewinder they attempted to steal the Serpent Crown but were stopped by Thing, Stingray and Triton. The four would later form the core of the Serpent Society. In the Serpent Society she struck up a friendship with Asp and Diamondback. When Viper infiltrated and later took over the Serpent Society Black Mamba was one of the few members refusing to betray Society leader Sidewinder. Black Mamba, Asp and Diamondback helped Captain America defeat Viper and the rest of the Serpent Society.

Subsequently Black Mamba, Asp and Diamondback formed "BAD Girls, Inc.", a group of adventures who on occasion would help Captain America and the Avengers out. During the Civil War she was opposed to the superhero registration, but later registered and served as part of the "Women Warriors", the official super hero team of Delaware. She later returned to the Serpent Society as well as its successor Serpent Solutions.

Black mamba

The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is a large venomous snake endemic to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Specimens vary in color from grey to dark brown, but not black. Juvenile black mambas tend to be lighter in color than adults and darken with age. It is the longest species of venomous snake indigenous to the African continent; mature specimens generally exceed and commonly attain . Specimens of have been reported.

Although most mamba species are tree-dwelling snakes, the black mamba is not generally arboreal, preferring lairs in terrestrial habitats in a range of terrains. These include savannah, woodlands, rocky slopes and in some regions dense forest. It is diurnal and chiefly an ambush predator, known to prey on hyrax, bushbabies and other small mammals as well as birds. It is also a pursuit predator; in this it resembles some other long, speedy, highly-venomous species with well-developed vision. Over suitable surfaces it is possibly the speediest species of snake, capable of at least over short distances. Adult mambas have few natural predators.

In a threat display, the mamba usually opens its inky black mouth, spreads its narrow neck-flap and sometimes hisses. It is capable of striking at considerable range and occasionally may deliver a series of bites in rapid succession. Its venom is primarily composed of potent neurotoxins which may cause fast onset of symptoms. Despite its reputation for being formidable and highly aggressive, like most snakes, it usually attempts to flee from humans unless threatened or cornered. Not being proximal to humans, bites from the black mamba are not frequent.
