Between the Lines (TV series)

Between the Lines is a television police drama series created by J. C. Wilsher and produced by World Productions for the BBC. It was first shown on BBC1 between 1992 and 1994, running for three series.

The show centred on the eventful life of Detective Superintendent Tony Clark, played by Neil Pearson. Clark was an ambitious member of the Complaints Investigation Bureau (CIB), an internal organisation of the Metropolitan Police that investigates claims of corruption inside the police force. Along the way Clark had to overcome strong influence from his superiors and problems in his private life, most notably the break-up of his marriage following an affair with WPC Jenny Dean ( Lesley Vickerage). Throughout the series Clark was assisted by sidekicks Harry Naylor ( Tom Georgeson) and Mo Connell ( Siobhan Redmond).

The show became a surprise hit for the BBC, winning a British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) for Best Drama Series in 1994. In 2000 it was voted into the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes by the British Film Institute. The series was reviewed in an episode of the BBC documentary series “Call the Cops”, which stated the series had “found a way of getting to grips with the corruption scandals of the 1990's”.

Between the Lines (Janis Ian album)

Between the Lines, released in 1975 and containing the popular song " At Seventeen", is the best-known album by the then New York-based singer-songwriter Janis Ian. The album reached #1 on the Billboard album chart in September 1975, and sold 1.9 million copies in the United States.

"At Seventeen" was released as a single and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Ian won the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song, and performed it on the first episode of Saturday Night Live on October 11, 1975. Recorded at 914 Sound Studios in New York, Between the Lines is Ian's seventh studio album.

Between the Lines (Five Star album)

Between the Lines is the third album by the British pop group Five Star, released in September 1987. The album peaked at number 7 in the UK.

Between the Lines was recorded in early 1987. The opening four tracks were recorded in Los Angeles with the producer Dennis Lambert. Two more tracks were recorded there with Richard James Burgess, who had produced tracks on their previous album. The rest of the album was made up of songs written by the band members with the writers producing their own tracks with their father, Buster Pearson, in London. Deniece sings lead on all tracks except "You Should Have Waited" (sung by Lorraine) and "Knock Twice" (sung by Doris).

The album did not sell as well as its predecessor, Silk & Steel, and spent only two weeks in the top 10, and 17 weeks on the UK Albums Chart altogether. However, the album was certified Platinum for sales of over 300,000 copies by summer 1988. It did not chart at all in the US.

The first single, " Whenever You're Ready", was released a month prior to the album in the UK and peaked at number 11 in the UK Singles Chart but only managed to reach number 39 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart, missing the Billboard Hot 100. The ballad " Strong as Steel", written by Diane Warren, was the second single but fared even worse, peaking at number 16 in the UK in October and not charting at all in the US. When the third UK single, " Somewhere Somebody", failed to reach the top 20 in December of that year (peaking at #23), promotion of the album ended with no further singles released (there had been seven and six UK singles from their first two albums respectively). Having released a single every two to four months since 1985, the band released no new material for six months and subsequently changed their image for their next album.

An expanded version of Between the Lines was released by Cherry Pop Records in April 2012.
