Avanthkar or Avantkar or Avanthikar or Avuntkar is a surname used by Bhavsar Maratha caste. This is termed as “Annav” in Marathi. Avanthkar is predominant in the state of Maharashtra, and who have spread across different south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Goa. The Avanthkar are Kshatriyas, who were soldiers of Chhatrapati Shivaji, believed to be migrating while capturing the south Indian fort in Vellore and Gingee during 1676. In 1667, Chhatrapati Shivaji visited the Kalikambal Temple located in George Town, Chennai, India during when few settled in Chennai, then known as “Madras”.
