Avalon (; ; probably from afal, meaning "apple") is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's 1136 pseudo historical account Historia Regum Britanniae ("The History of the Kings of Britain") as the place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. Avalon was associated from an early date with mystical practices and people such as Morgan le Fay.

Avalon (webcomic)

Avalon was a webcomic by Josh Phillips set in the fictional city of Avalon, Ontario, Canada. It focused on a group of high school students, and while it was originally gag-a-day, it evolved into a coherent, long-term story with realistic characters. The comic launched on 8 November 1999 and was originally scheduled to end in August 2002.

After a series of lengthening delays, Phillips eventually placed the comic on indefinite hiatus on 24 August 2004 and posted a text summary of how the story would have played out, including the revelation that one of the presumed to be heterosexual characters would enter a lesbian affair. Phillips announced that, having recently been married, he had "outgrown" Avalon and cartooning in general, and had no further need to continue the project.

Avalon is the RIAA Platinum-certified eighth and final studio album by the English rock band Roxy Music. Released in May 1982, it was recorded in 1981–82 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and is generally regarded as the culmination of the smoother, more adult-oriented sound of the band's later work. It was the band's most successful studio album, reaching No. 1 in the UK (for 3 weeks) and staying on the album charts for over a year. Although it only climbed as high as No. 53, Avalon is notable for being the band's only million-selling record in the United States.

A single, " More Than This", preceded the album and was a Top 10 hit in Britain, Australia, and several European countries. The film stars Małgorzata Foremniak as Ash, a player in an illegal virtual reality video game whose sense of reality is challenged as she attempts to unravel the true nature and purpose of the game. Avalon was filmed in Wrocław, Nova Huta, the Modlin Fortress and Warsaw. The 2009 film Assault Girls that was written and directed by Oshii, is a stand-alone sequel set in the same fictional universe as Avalon.

Avalon is the debut solo album by current Saosin and current Circa Survive, vocalist Anthony Green. It was released August 5, 2008 on Photo Finish Records, with a US tour to coincide with its release. Keith Goodwin, Tim Arnold, and Dan Schwartz (also known as the band Good Old War) have guest appearances on this record. The album leaked in its entirety on August 1, 2008. "Avalon" is a 1920 popular song written by Al Jolson, Buddy DeSylva and Vincent Rose referencing Avalon, California. It was introduced by Jolson and interpolated in the musicals Sinbad and Bombo. Jolson's recording rose to number two on the charts in 1921. The song was possibly written by Rose, but Jolson's popularity as a performer allowed him to claim composer co-credit. Originally, only Rose and Jolson were credited, and DeSylva's name was added later.

A popular jazz standard, the song has been recorded by many artists, including Cab Calloway (1934), Coleman Hawkins (1935) and Eddie Durham (1936). The Benny Goodman Quartet played the song in their famous 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. The song was included in the biographical films The Jolson Story (1946) and The Benny Goodman Story (1956), and is also being noodled by Sam ( Dooley Wilson) at the piano right before he plays As Time Goes By in the movie Casablanca (1942). The tune remains popular in the gypsy jazz repertoire, having been performed by Wawau Adler and others.

The tune's opening melody resembles a part of Giacomo Puccini's aria E lucevan le stelle, from the opera Tosca, but in the major key. Puccini's publishers sued the song's composers in 1921 for use of the melody, and were awarded $25,000 and all subsequent royalties of the song by the court.
