What is "atenas"

Atenas (ah-TEN-nahss) is the capital city of the canton of Atenas in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. It is also the name of the distrito (district) that includes the city.

The district of Atenas covers an area of 8.93 km², and has a population of approx. 27,000 inhabitants. The city of Atenas itself has about 5,000 inhabitants. Its name means Athens (Αθήνα), the capital of Greece.

Atenas is the fifth canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of , and has a population of 27,112 (estimate as of 2013). The capital city of the canton is also called Atenas.
