n. (initialism of acute radiation syndrome English)
n. (plural of AR English)
An ARS, which stands for Air - Roll - Spin, is a bodyboarding trick that combines an El Rollo with a 360° spin while the bodyboarder is in the air. The bodyboarder starts off by approaching the lip and doing the El Rollo, and during the rotation throws him/herself into a forward 360° spin. Michael Eppelstun invented the trick. The move was revolutionary and ushered in whole new gymnastic approach to riding a bodyboard. Kelly Slater credits the Rodeo Clown move was adapted from the ARS.
The ARS rocket family was a series of rockets developed by the American Interplanetary Society — later the American Rocket Society — during the 1930s. Based on the German Mirak rocket, it used a liquid-fueled rocket engine, powered by liquid oxygen and gasoline propellants. The first successful launch, of the ARS-2, took place on May 14, 1933. The design was modified and refined by successive rockets; the last launch of an ARS rocket took place on May 9, 1937.
Ars ( ), or Arsim (the plural in Hebrew) is a derogatory Hebrew slang term for the Israeli stereotype of a low-class young man of Mizrahi origin (Mizrahis are Israeli Jews who immigrated to Israel from Muslim countries, and their offsprings). The stereotype may also refer to personal effects such as flashy jewelry and clothing. A woman fitting this stereotype is an Arsit (though this usually implies masculinity in the woman), the word formed by adding the Hebrew feminine ending "it" to the Arabic word "Ars" (, ). Another term used for women is Freḥa (פרחה), originally a female Moroccan first name popular in the 1950s and the 1960s, during the large immigration wave from Morocco to Israel. The Ars subculture traditionally was associated with young Jews of Middle Eastern origin, but in recent years has expanded to a broader range of ethnicities. In particular, "Freḥa" is used presently for intellectually shallow girls of all ethnicities, like bimbo or airhead in English.
The term is often considered offensive and racist towards Mizrahi youth, and is usually considered pejorative when said in person. Some criticize the term for stereotyping Mizrahi youth culture and for being inaccurate.
In Arabic the word ars has several meanings:
- A shepherd (literal meaning)
- A pimp in general (common colloquial meaning, the "sheep" being his prostitutes). Cfr. "ro`e zonot" (literally "shepherd of whores") in Hebrew.
- A cuckold, a man whose wife is unfaithful to him
- A man who pimps his wife
- A wicked or contemptible person, a "bad guy"
- A bastard, an illegitimate child
A long form used sometimes is arsawwat, although the Arabic plural of "Ars" is "Arsat".
An arş ( Ottoman Turkish آرش) is an old Turkish unit of length.
The word means 'forearm' and thus the measure corresponds to a cubit.
Ars is a 1959 French film short written and directed by Jacques Demy.
Usage examples of "ars".
The carriers and those who traveled in them had been described to the southern indigenes by those braves Arsen had projected back down to a place near their homelands and, more recently, by Soaring Eagle and his runners, so the arrival of Arsen, Mike, Simon, and Two-hand-killer was not openly remarked upon by the gathered elders and warriors, though Arsen was willing to bet that every one of them was curious as old hell.
There was not as much game on the north side of the river, where the granite outcropped, as there was on the south, so Arsen put the first hunting partyforty-two Creek braves, nine Shawnees, Simon Delahaye, and Greg Sinclairdown about halfway between the ruins and the edge of the great plain whereon the bison and the horses always grazed.
Immediately the circle of braves, Greg, and Simon had winked out of sight, Arsen set the Class Five projector and sent the bison and one of the horses winking after them.
Then one day, determined to force the recalcitrant sachems into a decision of some nature, Arsen projected one of the whaleboats upriver from the island, saw Squash Woman and all the rest go aboard it, then projected it and them to the place of stone ruins across the western mountains, he and Lisa following quickly in their carriers.
That meant that, once arrived, the sachem would assuredly be considered by the Indians to be wiser than Squash Woman and, therefore, would become automatically the head of the council of sachems, and Arsen meant to get cozy with him before Squash Woman and her cronies could get him set into their intransigent mold of total non-cooperation and endless demands for foods and gifts.
Captain Arsen be most wroth at the continued lack of resolve of the old sachem, Squash Woman, and the council that sitteth with her, here.
Mike Sikeena had adroitly and silently clubbed down the two sentries on the foredeck and the quarterdeck, both he and Arsen guided their opened carriers along the rank of iron guns positioned in the waist of the ship, unplugging touchholes, filling these holes with fine priming powder from flasks they carried, then going on to the next gun, not stopping until all of the larboard deck guns had been primed to fire.
While John stitched up the scalp of a Creek Arsen recognized as one of Soaring Eagle's original group of braves, Lisa was giving an injection to another Creek brave with a compound fracture of a lower arm, while Rose worked with forceps, small surgical knife, and steady, if bloody, hands to remove innumerable splinters and bits of pine bark from the legs and buttocks of Haigh Panoshian, who was turning the air around them midnight-blue with a torrent of curses, obscenities, blasphemies, and depthless crudities, all interspersed with yelps and yips and other indications of pain.
They sailed silently over a herd of long-horned bison that straggled for what Arsen computed to be over four statute miles, with bands of the small, big-headed, shaggy horses grazing among the huge, dark-colored bovines.
They all started shooting the big fucker, but he just kept coming, but real slow, making noises like you'd have to hear your own self to believe, Arsen sort of like growling but too sort of like a man with a broke jaw trying to talk, too.
Arsen had demonstrated an ability to protect himself and John from the stranger's attempted assault, but John knew damned well that he could not do anything remotely similar, for while Arsen had been learning such practices in Marine boot camp and in the living hell of the war in Vietnam, John had been learning more peaceful, money-making pursuits in dental school.
The creature's upper canine teeth were at least two inches in length, Arsen figured, and the thick arms and hunched shoulders onto which the big head seemed to fit without any neck denoted terrible strength.
Arsen had gone back—after mastering the uses of the carrier that he had found in the crypt when they had landed with said crypt in the wilderness when some something had snatched them from out the comfortable suite in the country hall of the Archbishop of York, months back—to their old world and used one of the projectors that the carrier had explained to him how to fabricate to bring the erudite man to this world at the instigations of Greek John and Ilsa.

Arsen had often reflected that his own father's father, Grandpapa Vasil Ademian, would probably have gotten on fabulously with the old Micco, for like the aged Indian, the old man had been both smart as a whip and tough as rusty nails until the very day he had died after helping to reshoe a fractious horse.
