Ariane (rocket family)

Ariane is a series of a European civilian expendable launch vehicles for space launch use. The name comes from the French spelling of the mythological character Ariadne.

France first proposed the Ariane project and it was officially agreed upon at the end of 1973 after discussions between France, Germany and the UK. The project was Western Europe's second attempt to develop its own launcher following the unsuccessful Europa project. The Ariane project was code-named L3S (the French abbreviation for third-generation substitution launcher). The European Space Agency (ESA) charged the EADS subsidiary Astrium, presently Airbus Defence and Space, with the development of all Ariane launchers and of the testing facilities, while Arianespace, a 32.5% CNES commercial subsidiary created in 1980, handles production, operations and marketing.

Ariane is an opera in five acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Catulle Mendès after Greek mythology (the tale of Ariadne). It was first performed at the Palais Garnier in Paris on 31 October 1906, with Lucienne Bréval in the title role.

Ariane (film)

Ariane is a 1931 German drama film directed by Paul Czinner and starring Elisabeth Bergner, Rudolf Forster and Annemarie Steinsieck. It is an adaptation of the 1920 French novel Ariane, jeune fille russe by Claude Anet. Two alternative language versions The Loves of Ariane and Ariane, jeune fille russe were made at the same time. The film was the inspiration of the 1957 Billy Wilder film Love in the Afternoon. Wilder remembered the film as "touching and funny".

Ariane (Ariadne) is an opera by the French composer Jean-Joseph Mouret, first performed at the Académie Royale de Musique (the Paris Opera) on 6 April 1717. It takes the form of a tragédie en musique in a prologue and five acts. The libretto is by Charles-François-Joseph-Victor de La Grange-Chancel and Pierre-Charles Roy.

'Ariane' is a modern cultivar of domesticated apple that was recently developed in France for scab resistance.

'Ariane' is mainly served as a dessert apple because of its mild pleasant flavour. The skin has an attractive combination of yellow and red colours. It was developed by Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA) by crossing a hybrid of 'Florina' x 'Prima' with pollen from ' Golden Delicious'.

Besides good resistance to scab, it does quite well with other apple diseases. Fruit keeps fresh three months or more. Fruit is ripening in late summer, and is delicious even if refrigerated for winter eating.
