Adonis

Adonis (; ), in Greek mythology, is a central figure in various mystery religions. In 1966, Wahib Attalah wrote that the "cult of Adonis belonged to women," and further asserted "the cult of dying Adonis was fully developed in the circle of young girls around Sappho on Lesbos, about 600 BC, as a fragment of Sappho reveals."

There has been much scholarship over the centuries concerning the multiple roles of Adonis, if any, and his meaning and purpose in Greek religious beliefs. Modern scholarship sometimes describes him as an annually renewed, ever-youthful vegetation god, a life-death-rebirth deity whose nature is tied to the calendar. His name is often applied in modern times to handsome youths, of whom he is the archetype.

Adonis is an 1884 burlesque musical produced by Edward E. Rice who also composed the music along with John Eller. The book was written by William Gill.

After playing at Hooley's Opera House in Chicago in the summer of 1884, it debuted at the Bijou Theatre in New York on September 4, 1884. It there had a run of 603 consecutive performances, making it the longest-running show on Broadway during that period, and the longest Broadway run of all time until 1893. It was co-written and directed by Henry E. Dixey who also starred as the titular Adonis.

Adonis tells the story of a gorgeous male statue that comes to life and finds human ways so unpleasant that he chooses to turn back into stone – after spoofing several famous personalities.

The company traveled to London after the play closed in New York.

It was so called from the Amonians, who settled here under the name of Adonians, and who founded the city Adonis.

Smiling at her half-hearted invitation, Adonis grasped a bar in each hand and pried them apart.

An open area surrounded them, though she saw that Adonis was leaning against what appeared to be a short wall.

If she could accept the possibility that Adonis was from an alien race, why was it so hard to accept that he was part of the human race?

Really, there were some fairly big differences between some of the races, but, when all was said and done, not such a gap as Adonis represented.

It occurred to her quite suddenly that she might have felt more comfortable with the idea that Adonis was from some alien race because it seemed less threatening to imagine some distant race of beings like him than someone next door.

She sensed movement as Adonis knelt beside her, and that he studied her for several moments before hesitantly placing one arm around her comfortingly.

The streets were deserted--or at least they seemed to be--as Stevie and Adonis made their way down a back alley and, after disarming the security system, entered her home.

The toga, she discovered, had disappeared, but she was learning not to be too surprised about anything Adonis did and in any case, she was fully aroused herself.

Before she could do more than gasp in surprise, Adonis grasped her ankles and yanked her toward him, burying his mouth on her mound.

Finding a mostly empty box of sugar coated cereal, she sat down at the kitchen counter with it and ate it dry, wondering where Adonis had gone off to.

Despite her brave assertions to Adonis, however, she realized that she really had no desire to resume her former life under the present circumstances.

For the first time since the night Adonis had left, she slept soundly.

Pete was still gaping at him in surprise when Adonis clove his head from his shoulders.

For once in her life, she could think of nothing at all to say as Adonis laid his trident aside and deftly removed the ropes binding her wrists and ankles.
